Disappearing Budapest

Only photographs can preserve the past. In this album you find shots of
small business in Budapest from the 1950’s and 60’s. The series was taken
together with Aliona Frankl. All the small shops shown in this selection
have disappeared since.

Coal

The coal mines in the South of Hungary closed down for economic reasons at the end of the 1980’s. The photos in this book document the already deserted and empty spaces of coalmining that started way back at the end of the 19th century.

The Art of Wrapping

Jewish Budapest

An enthusiastically assimilating Jewry was one of the engines of bourgeois transformation in Budapest, which blossomed at the time of the country’s 1896 millenary celebrations. Its activity left a marked trace on the image of the city, which was in the process of becoming a metropolitan centre. This interaction finally ended with the anti-Jewish laws and the Holocaust. Lugo’s photographs immortalise what has remained of this culture and reveal that which aims to live again.

Szentendre

Szentendre is a small historical serbian town 20 minutes by car North of Budapest. There have always been a lot of artists living there. This album shown contemporary and traditional life in this charming place.

Athens Then and Now

Following the success of the Budapest 1900-2000 album I did the same thing in Athens where changes were much more marked. Unlike the Budapest album it was not based on the photos of only one photographer but a collection of various artists.
